HOW TO USE 'IS' IN BAHASA MELAYU

This is one of the common mistakes done by most of the international school students. They don't know what is the actual translation of 'is' in Bahasa Melayu. Let me explain the right way to use it in the sentence.

"IS" considered as verb and used with he/she/it.

1ST SITUATION: USE 'IS' WITH NOUN (KATA NAMA). IT MEANS 'IALAH'.

A.    He is a lawyer.
        Dia ialah seorang peguam.

B.    She is the best student in the school.
Dia ialah murid terbaik di sekolah.

C.    It is one of the best hotel in Europe.
Ia ialah salah sebuah hotel terbaik di Eropah.

However, in BM, the sentence will be way better without 'IALAH'. Hence, the sentences will be:

A.    Dia seorang peguam.
B.    Dia murid terbaik di sekolah.
C.    Ia salah sebuah hotel terbaik di Eropah.

2ND SITUATION: USE 'IS' WITH ADJECTIVE (KATA ADJEKTIF). IT MEANS 'ADALAH'.

A.    The machine is easy to use.
Mesin itu adalah mudah untuk digunakan.

B.    Navin's examination result is very excellent.
Keputusan peperiksaan Navin adalah sangat cemerlang.

C.    He is sad because his beloved cat died yesterday.
Dia adalah sedih kerana kucing kesayangannya mati semalam.

However, in BM, the sentence will be way better without 'ADALAH'. Hence, the sentences will be:

A.    Mesin itu mudah untuk digunakan.
B.
    Keputusan peperiksaan Navin sangat cemerlang.
C.
Dia sedih kerana kucing kesayangannya mati semalam.

3RD SITUATION: USE 'IS' FOR VERB (KATA KERJA) IN ORDER TO SHOW THAT THE VERB IS PRESENT TENSE. IT MEANS 'SEDANG'.

A.    Jack is studying as preparation for his final year examination.
Jack sedang belajar sebagai persiapan bagi peperiksaan akhir         tahunnya.

B.    He is playing football with his friends.
Dia sedang bermain bola sepak dengan kawan-kawannya.

C.    She is cooking in the kitchen.
        Dia sedang memasak di dapur.

AS CONCLUSION, THESE ARE THE RIGHT TRANSLATIONS OF 'IS' IN BM:

1st situation (Kata Nama) = 'is' means IALAH

2nd situation (Kata Adjektif) = 'is' means ADALAH

3rd situation (Kata Kerja) = 'is' mean SEDANG
